You are listless.Īnyone can make a good-sounding player. When you have little design cohesion, you have little to hold to into a plan. It’s not a looks thing, it really is a support/ergonomic thing.įiio could have designed a UI that works and then is adaptable to their brand, rather than designing a UI that works on one device only and is completely different to another device from the same company. It also means that the company has no cohesion. If a company flip-flaps all over the place and remakes UI from one device to another, it means you, as the customer, have to relearn a new interface each time. If I may, UI tells a person where a company is and where they will go. But in the overall score board, I still don’t consider it to be a leader in the DAP game. On one hand I want to congratulate Fiio for taking their DAP game even further. It’s like having the option to have a refrigerator on your new car: nice, but nothing that would affect my buying decision. Other things like 24/192 and DSD support may look good on the feature list, but frankly it’s not that big of a deal today. Even as I had learned to live with the X5’s user interface and had memorised the four buttons’ functions, I still can’t feel at home with the user interface and that is my main beef with the player. I mean, if the X5 sounds as good as the Altmann Tera or the Hifiman 801, I really wouldn’t mind adapting to the UI, but it’s not. The build, the size, the controls and UI being HUGE factors on day to day use. However to be honest I would still, at the end of the day, prefer to live with the Astell & Kern.

I really enjoyed the sound of the X5, easily more than my preferred daily driver that is the AK100 Mk2. I’ve always been a fan of PCM-based DACs (Everything PCM1704 from the Hifiman HM-801 to the Ayon Skylla II), HRT Music Streamers (17), and especially the underrated Neko Audio D100 with the PCM1794. The decision to go with a PCM1792 is a good one and one that I approve of. The large size (and weight too), the decision to go with the jog dial and the four corner buttons, the overall UI, the lack of internal memory, only means one thing: that I probably won’t go crazy about it UNLESS it has a sound to die for. The sentiment is shared with a few people I had the chance to talk with over the X5. And though I may not be a fan of the DX50’s sound, it’s still easily the better player when you consider the total score including size, build, and UI. However, like the X3, the X5 especially with its unintuitive controls and rather large size fails to win my heart.

It’s good to see that Fiio is constantly upping their game. Add these to the growing list of minuses, and the X5 really needs something huge to pay back all these negatives. The absence of an onboard memory, regardless for what design decision, is also another minus that adds up to the player’s overall score. Unfortunately at the moment the Cowon Z2 Plenue appears to be available only in Korea, and is expected to retail for $230 for the 8GB model, and $300 for the 32GB model after conversion.Though the firmware itself is quite solid and far more stable than the DX50 was when I reviewed it, it does come with some “imperfections” such as not being able to change the volume level when the screen is off (even though the player is running and there is music playing).

It sports a microSD card slot for extra memory expansion, and will also feature WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity and an FM tuner as icing on the cake.

In terms of hardware, users can expect a 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM accompanying it, a 3.7” 800×480 OLED display, and with storage options ranging from 8GB all the way up to 32GB.

The Z2 Plenue features a heavily skinned version of Android, but given how the device is being touted as a media player rather than a phone, we’re guessing it shouldn’t really matter which version of Android it is running on, as long as its media player capabilities are present.

However there are other media players available in the market, such as Microsoft’s Zune and Cowon, a South Korean company who has recently expanded their line of portable media players with the Z2 Plenue, an Android based portable media player that might prove to be a decent alternative to the iPod touch.

As far as portable media players go, there are a good many of us who have been brainwashed into associating MP3 players with Apple’s series of iPods.
